How to Start a 3D Printing Project

To get started with your own 3D Print, prepare your design using 3D Modeling software. If you are an engineering student, you have access to SolidWorks through the Engineering Skybox. If you are not an engineering student, there is free 3D Modeling Software available. Some of the software that we recommend is 123D Design  or TinkerCad . If you are not interested in creating your own design, there are many free designs available on Thingiverse .

Once you have your prepared file, export it as an .stl or a .zip and fill out the 3D Printing Order Form . This will send your design to our technicians who will review it. You will then receive an email estimating the cost of the print, how long it will take, and ask you for a final confirmation before we begin printing your design. You will receive another email when the printing process begins, and again when it is complete. You can pick up your print anytime we are open.

If you have any other questions or if you would like to learn more about 3D Printing including how to prepare models for 3D printing, take a look at the 3D Hubs Knowledge Base , or Common 3D Printing Terms .

Pricing

Since the 3D printing service is subsidized by the University’s Technology Fee, we are able to offer the very low rate of 10 cents per gram. The cost will be charged to HuskyBucks for student, staff, and faculty. Library patrons can charge this fee to their library services card.

Pickup

After you receive confirmation that your 3D print has finished printing, please pick up your print at our 3D Printing Studio in the Homer Babbidge Library.
